De Bethune’s latest model is in a style quite different from what we are accustomed to and a novel piece exploring new territory, the Arts and Crafts. It is inspired by the Mayan Calendar.

Through their calendars, the Maya established with incredible precision the end of their ‘long count’ calendar to be Friday, December 21, 2012, this being the basis of various interpretations for the end of the world.

To mark the symbolic passing of humankind as predicted by the Mayan calendar, De Bethune will release twelve unique watches in honor of these traditions.

With the the Ninth Mayan Underworld, De Bethune has tried to recreate the deep atmosphere of pottery and stone sculptures by Mayan scribes.

The bezel of the dial shows the time according to the Mayan number system, while the inner ring shows the 20 glyphs of deities, sacred animals and objects representing different calendar days.

The center of the dial which has the “Baktun” hand-engraved by Michèle Rothen on it.
This is the longest measurement of the Mayan calendar system known as the ‘Long Count’ and equals 144,000 days.

In order to highlight the subtle visual balance the needles are made of sapphire blue trim steel following an exclusive procedure devised by De Bethune.

The name of the watch refers to the ninth and final underworld – each lasts 400 years – and will culminate as the calendar ends in 2012.

“Moments in Time” are a series of watch sculptures by British designer and inventor Dominic Wilcox.

He has created unique, miniature animated scenes using a collection of watches and customised model figures.

Reflections on human behavior and delightfully surreal scenes, each tells a story or conveys a message and draws on everyday and imagined situations.

A man in a suit extends his arm towards his colleague expecting a handshake. The colleague crosses his arms in clear disregard for their friendship, in “The unrequited handshake” (above)

“I spent time thinking about the relationship between the two people, how one passes another repeatedly and I tried to think about when that situation happens in real life or in an imagined scenario.”

Two people sitting on a bench fail to give up their seat to an elderly woman walking with the aid of a stick while holding bags in “Comfortably oblivious”. The numbers and hands of a watch are swept away in “Watch sweeper and an incredible feat of balance and strength fails to be noticed by a man so engrossed in his iPhone.

Figures are attached to the hour and minute hands so that characters meet and encircle each other to the rhythms of time.

“I altered head and arm angles of found model figures and made objects such as the LCD TV with wire and plug. The glass domes are hand blown to fit each watch exactly.”

Being no doubt quite fragile these pieces are obviously more like works of art rather than practical timepieces, they are collectibles which create a unique atmosphere.

Comfortably Oblivious and The Beautiful Game are on display along with The Sitting Man and Unrequited Handshake at an exhibition at Phillips de Pury until 31 January 2012.

Each sculpture is a unique piece, based on a vintage watch and protected by a glass dome. The watches will be on sale for £500 + VAT = £600 each at Dezeen Space, at 54 Rivington Street, London EC2A 3QN.

Chopard have released a series of pieces created in collaboration with the Japanese master and “living national treasure”, Masumura Kiichiro. The concept of “Living National Treasure” was developed in 1950 by the Japanese government and is used to define those who help preserve heritage.

These creations embody the traditional techniques of Urushi and Maki-e lacquer work.

Urushi is an ancient Japanese art of lacquering. The varnish is achieved through the sap of the Urushi tree, also called “lacquer tree” or “Japanese varnish,” which grows mainly in Japan and China. The harvesting of the resin, a bit like rubber from the rubber tree, can only be once a year, in very small quantities.

Three to five years after its collection, the resin is processed into a highly resistant coating of honey-like consistency. It is then applied in layers very thin, traditionally on everyday objects, such as bowls or boxes.

The three dials are a peacock, a goldfish, and the jungle. Each piece, meticulously painted by hand, is unique and offers a host of new details, full of great poetry.

The low-profile rose gold housings are 39.5 mm in diameter and 6.8 mm thick and feature mechanisms with 65 hours power reserve.

An ingeniously conceived titanium skull offsets the familiar signature case shape of Richard Mille’s new Tourbillon RM 052 Skull watch.

The skull plays an integral part in the design and engineering of the human skeleton and Richard Mille has taken the motif and made it an integral part of his new skeleton watch, the Tourbillon RM 052 Skull.

The skull is usually used as a decorative feature on watches but the Tourbillon RM 052 incorporates the form into the movement using it for both style and function.

The movements center bridge has been constructed from the back of the skull and the ruby of the tourbillon cage is held between the upper and lower jaws. Four bridges connect the movement to the case and form the crossed bones of the skull and cross bone design.

Limited edition of 21 pieces, which includes 15 pieces in titanium and 6 unique set pieces in red or white gold.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OF THE CALIBER RICHARD MILLE RM 052 TOURBILLON SKULL

Limited edition of 21 pieces, which includes 15 pieces in titanium and 6 unique set pieces in red or white gold.

CALIBER RM052: manual winding tourbillon movement with hours, minutes. Dimensions: 42.70 mm x 50.00 mm x 15.95 mm.

MAIN FEATURES

POWER RESERVE:
Circa 48 hours.

BASEPLATE AND BRIDGES IN GRADE 5 TITANIUM:
The RM 052 revolves around the skull. This is fascinating from an artistic point of view, but even more so from a technical point of view. The baseplate has been finished in grade 5 titanium, a biocompatible, highly corrosion-resistant and remarkably rigid alloy, which enables the gear train to function effortlessly. The alloy is 90% titanium, 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium. This combination further increases its mechanical properties, which explains its frequent use in the aerospace, aeronautical and automobile industries. The upper and lower jaws holds the tourbillon cage jewel. The rear of the skull acts as a central bridge. The “Jolly Roger” comes to life thanks to the 4 bridges that link the movement to the case.

The skeletonized baseplate and the bridges have been subjected to intensive and complete validation tests to optimize their resistance capacities.

BALANCE WHEEL WITH VARIABLE INERTIA:
The free-sprung balance provides better reliability in the event of shocks, movement assembly and disassembly. It also guarantees better chronometric results over an extended period of time. There is no need for an index plate, allowing more precise and frequent adjustment using 4 setting screws.

FAST ROTATING BARREL (6 hours per revolution instead of 7.5 hours):
This type of barrel provides the following advantages:
- The phenomenon of periodic internal mainspring adhesion is significantly diminished, thereby increasing performance,
- Provision of an excellent mainspring delta curve with an ideal power reserve/performance and regularity ratio.

BARREL PAWL WITH PROGRESSIVE RECOIL:
This device permits a profitable winding gain (circa 20 %), especially during the winding start. It is also helpful in the distribution of the mainspring’s internal tension.

WINDING BARREL TEETH AND THIRD-WHEEL PINION WITH CENTRAL INVOLUTE PROFILE:
The central involute profile of the winding barrel teeth and pinion provides an optimal pressure angle of 20°. This promotes effective rotary motion and allows for compensation of possible variations in the engagement of the going train thus insuring excellent torque transmission with a distinct improvement in performance.

SPLINE SCREWS IN GRADE 5 TITANIUM FOR THE BRIDGES:
This permits better control of the torque applied to the screws during assembly. These screws are therefore unaffected by physical manipulation during assembly or disassembly and age well.

OTHER FEATURES

- Movement dimensions: 32.80 x 30.90 mm
- Thickness: 6.87 mm
- Tourbillon diameter: 10.90 mm
- Balance wheel diameter: 9.12 mm
- Number of jewels: 19
- Balance wheel: GLUCYDUR, 2 arms, 4 setting screws
- Moment of inertia: 11.50 mg.cm2, angle of lift 53°
- Frequency: 21,600 vph (3 Hz)
- Balance spring: in ELINVAR by NIVAROX
- Shock protection: KIF ELASTOR KE 160 B28
- Barrel shaft in nickel-free Chronifer (DIN x 46 Cr13 + S), with with following characteristics: stainless, antimagnetic, tempered.

CASE:
The case of the RM 052 requires 86 stamping operations, of which 49 make up the striking of the three principal components (bezel, case middle and case back), before the cutting and milling can start. A first for Richard Mille, the case has been lightened by creating openings in the bezel and the case back. This skeletonised, original case reinforces the visual identity of the RM 052 Skull.

It takes 20 hours to set a machine and 30 hours of programming to produce just a single kit. The case requires 255 machining operations and the finishing phase involves 5 hours of satin finishing and polishing. A five-axis machining centre (perfected machine) must be used to create the case’s complex form. For each case machined, a period of 45 minutes is needed just for the positive engraving of the name “Richard Mille”. The chamfered edges of the case pillars and the openings to the bezel and the case back are hand-polished.

The tripartite case is water resistant to 50 meters, ensured by two Nitril O-ring seals. The case is assembled with 20 Spline screws in grade 5 titanium and abrasion resistant washers in 316L stainless steel.

SPLINE SCREWS IN GRADE 5 TITANIUM FOR THE CASE:
This permits better control of the torque applied to the screws during assembly. These screws are therefore unaffected by physical manipulation during assembly or disassembly and age well.

TORQUE LIMITING CROWN:
This additional security system prevents from accidental overwinding, which could cause damage to the winding stem or putting extreme pressure on the mainspring barrel.

FLANGES:
Upper flange in carbon, lower flange in grade 5 titanium with DLC coating.

CRYSTAL:
Bezel side: in sapphire (1,800 Vickers) with anti-glare coating (on both sides).
Thickness: 1.50 mm
Case back: in sapphire with anti-glare coating (on both sides)
Thickness: 1.20 mm in the centre and 2.04 mm at the outer edges

FINISHING

MOVEMENT:
- Hand-polished bevelling
- Microblasted milled sections
- Drawn or polished outer faces

STEEL PARTS:
- Microblasted surfaces
- Satin-brushed surfaces
- Hand-polished bevelling
- Hand-drawn finishing on the upper surfaces
- Matt strokes on the underside
- Lengthwise hand-drawn strokes on the sides
- Polished sinks

PROFILE-TURNING:
- Lapped and polished ends
- Burnished pivots

WHEELS:
- Concave chamfering with a diamond tool
- Circular-smoothed faces
- Rhodium plating (before cutting the teeth). Minimal corrections are made to the wheels to preserve their geometry and overall performance.

An arsenal of Three tourbillons combat the adverse gravitational effects on time with this the third in Harry Winston’s series focusing on the tourbillon.

Each has been offset by intervals of 36, 40 and 120 seconds in order to create the most accurate regulation of the movement.

Its two predecessors were large watches and No.3 is even more so with dimensions of 65.9mm x 45.9mm, a substantial case no doubt needed to accommodate the array of tourbillons.

Functionally, time is shown using two discs and sapphires that go from dark to light coloured indicate the power reserve and add a touch of glamor.

Limited to 20 pieces it will probably be priced in a similar range to the preceding models which were in the $700k area.

I’m excited to learn that Ludovic Ballouard has a new watch coming out called the “Half Time” and it is due to be available in May 2012.

This will be his second watch following his wonderfully whimsical and technically masterful “Upside Down Watch” with its cleverly designed dial featuring inverted hour markers.

Stylistically his follow up the “Half Time” appears to be in a similar vein featuring hour markers – this time Roman ones – that are cut in half and realign at the top to show the current hour. <del datetime="2012-01-24T12:15:51+00:00">As of yet only this drawing has been released, I will post photos when I receive them,</del> Update: video added, its the the kind of watch that is fascinating to see in motion, as Ludovic Ballouard describes it :

“As its name indicates, I have chosen to divide the hours in two ! All…except the current hour which is shown in the aperture situated at 12 o’clock !

Two dials turn simultaneously and instantaneously in the opposition direction to one another at the precise moment of the changing of the hour.

The hand situated at 6 o’clock shows the minutes. This is a retrograde minute. It moves backwards at the precise moment where the two dials themselves move in the opposite direction.

The new current hour shows in full and the minute hand resumes its course from point 0.”

Looking forward to hearing more on this in the near future.

The latest version of Cabestans Winch Tourbillon watch is named “Trapezium” after its case design.

Watchmaking and geometry have always intertwined, cases usually being round, rectangular or square..Cabestan offers an alternative with a trapezoidal enclosure. In geometry this is defined as a quadrilateral whose sides are unequal. No matter the angle of vision, a trapezoid is recognizable at first glance and sets the watch apart. Applied to the watch design, the result is a complex combination of quadrilaterals giving the timepiece an imposing appearance, and turns the case of the Trapezium into a perfect showcase for its amazing mechanism.

To the new case Eric Coudray has added case crowns which have been completely redesigned to reinforce the idea of inclination. Without effort, the mechanism engages and allows a single movement of the thumb and index finger to adjust the time and wind the watch.

The side panels of the Cabestan Trapezium are each provided with an opening for an amazing side view of the movement. The back of the unit is also equipped with a sapphire crystal so you can admire the inside of the mechanism through 360 degrees.

Price: 240 000 Swiss francs
